Volunteering

If you would like to volunteer, please email Jacquie Gable volunteer@cadsdressage.org

The shows would not be possible without volunteers. There are many different ways that people can help at the shows. Volunteers will also receive a free stall at the show if they volunteer for four hours. If you are able to volunteer, please email us. Remember, CADS members must volunteer eight hours to receive year end awards, although family members can volunteer in their place.

VOLUNTEER POSITIONS:,

RUNNER
Grab your tennis shoes!!  Runners help out in many ways at the shows.  A runner is needed to pick up tests from the Scribe and bring them to the Tabulator.  Usually this is done every second or third ride and correct etiquette stipulates that you wait to pick up the tests between rides.
A Runner also assists the Ring Steward to help make sure riders are at the gate and ready to ride their test.  This is very important so the show can run on schedule.  Occasionally Runners also run errands for the Show Manager and others involved with the show and can assist the Tabulator by arranging the completed tests and ribbons for contestants to pick up in between picking up tests from the Scribe.  Usually we like to have at least 2 Runners in every time slot.

TABULATOR
Do you like numbers?  The Tabulator adds the test scores, runs two (2) calculator tapes for each test and verifies that all totals are accurate.  You must be able to use a calculator and it is helpful if you are quick and accurate although the word “accurate” is the most important.  The Tabulator is also responsible for keeping two “Master Lists” of the results as classes are completed.  One list is posted for riders to be able to view the results as the show continues through the day and the other is for the Show Manager.   This is an important position – if scores are not accurate and numbers are not legible the Show Manager will not be able to use the scores to tabulate year end awards.  The Master List must be handed to the Show Manager at the end of the day.
Don’t let that scare you, however, if I can do it anyone can!

SCRIBE
The Scribe directly assists the Judge.  As tests are ridden, the scribe is responsible for writing down the Judge’s remarks and logging the points received.   This position is very interesting because it gives you information on what a Judge is watching for.  Most Judges’ try to keep their comments at a minimum and abbreviating is acceptable.  If you are unsure and have never been a Scribe before you may want to try the Intro Level and Training Levels first as the higher the Level the more detail there is to write down.   Believe me, I hardly knew what Dressage was a few years ago and there was no one to scribe….guess who learned fast!!  I think it is a lot of fun too!

RING STEWARD
The Ring Steward helps keep the show running on schedule!  A copy of the ride times are used to make sure the correct horse and rider combination are at the gate.  You will verify the ride’s number and if you are not familiar with the horse/rider combination you should ask their name to make sure the correct team is riding at the correct time.  The Ring Steward is assisted by a runner who helps to make sure riders from the warm up ring are at the gate on time.
